Pantera, one of the most successful and biggest selling rock bands in the world, has reissued its classic album ‘Vulgar Display of Power’ to mark the twenty-year anniversary of the original release. The new Deluxe Edition, issued by Rhino, is being made available on CD and digital download and both formats will boast a number of extras, including a previously unreleased song recorded during the original sessions for the album and a DVD of rare live concert footage shot at the 1992 Monsters of Rock concert in Italy. One of Iceland’s most successful bands – Sigur Ros – has announced that download and CD copies of their new album will be released at the end of May. The band, who have found their music championed by a number of major acts – including Coldplay and Radiohead – have been absent from the music scene for the past four years, during which time their lead singer Jonsi Birgisson released his debut solo album and toured in support of it. The Deep Blue Sea, the new film by one of the UK’s most acclaimed directors – Terence Davies – has been released on Blu-ray and DVD. The film, which stars the Oscar-winning actress Rachel Weisz, is set in post-war London and is an adaptation of a stage play by Terence Rattigan. (more…)

It has been confirmed by Paul Simon that his classic 1986 album Graceland will be reissued on vinyl and CD, complete with extra songs, in early June to mark the 25-year anniversary of the original release. (more…)

Last year saw a rise in the numbers of people choosing to buy CD copies of music, the latest research by The NPD Group shows. The data indicates that during 2011 the total number of CD buyers rose to 78 million across the world – an increase of 2 percent on the figures at the end of 2010. This research demonstrates that, despite the rise in popularity of subscription download music sites such as Spotify, Pandora and Rhapsody, the CD remains a viable music format. (more…)

The animated film Yellow Submarine, inspired by the Beatles song of the same name, has undergone restoration for a DVD release at the end of May. The restoration of the film, which saw its original cinema release in 1968, involved four months of painstaking work, with specialists opting to clean every frame individually by hand rather than utilising automated equipment. L.A. Woman, one of the most famous songs by the legendary sixties rock band The Doors, has been released as an edited single complete with accompanying music video. When the song first saw the light of day back in 1971, it was as an album track on the long-player of the same name – the last studio album released by The Doors prior to the death of singer Jim Morrison. The DVD release of the HBO series Game of Thrones has set a new record for the biggest first-week sales of any show in the history of the network. In the week of release, season one of the fantasy show sold a remarkable 350,000 DVD copies, leaving shops and DVD printing and duplication firms working overtime to meet demand. The figures achieved by Game of Thrones also put it ahead of first-week DVD sales by such notable HBO programmes as Sex and the City, The Sopranos and True Blood. (more…)

Damon Albarn, the frontman of one Britain’s most enduring rock bands Blur, is set to release a solo album on Parlophone Records in May. Although Blur hit their commercial high point in the mid-1990s, Albarn has gone on to far greater international success with his sideline project Gorillaz, indicating that sales of download and CD copies of his first real solo album could be even greater than they were at the height of Blur’s fame in the UK – and CD printing and duplication firms may be spending much of the summer on this release.
